The Badlands N.P. is one of the most fossil-rich places in the world. Fossils of ancient rhinos and marine life can be found there. You can also see magnificent bison and herds of bighorn sheep graze the prairie throughout the park. The Lakota named the area “Mako Sica,” which means “badlands.” When it rains, the soft muddy soil forms a sticky clay, making it extremely hard to navigate when it’s wet. Also, the buttes and canyons are rough terrains to travel, hence the “Bad Lands.”
